Battle Cry
Warrior girls with aching bones
Put the weight down, call me these stanzas home
Warrior girls, fists clenched tight
I know you are strong
We will win this fight
Warrior girl, arms outstretched in flight
Settle in for a moment, settle in for tonight
Warrior girls
Stallions running wild
Lone flowers in concrete worlds
Rock solid skyscrapers in a city of guild
These words are for you
Born with blood on your back
Innocence in your mouth
Fire seeping through your skin
Too hot to the touch
You were singing their songs in your jazz kind of way
Too reckless to run, too brave to stay
But the warrior girls
with the wind on your side
You are still here
You are more than alive
You warrior girls
With sacrifice all you know
You radiate sunlight, magic, poetry
you will always glow
You have the lightness of a songbird
but the body of phoenix
you rise
you warrior girl
you always rise
the best parts of you
are what some cannot see
and you fight on
even when outnumbered by the enemies
warrior girls
fluttering dragonfly
brilliant mastermind
warrior girls
you will do so much more than fight
hear me now,
these will not always be your nights
there will come a day
there is no other way
for them
but surrender
you are so many steps ahead
and I promise you
in all that you’ve bled
you have made a legacy
for all the world to see
you will lay down your sword
you will get a chance to be
and we will be there
to finish the fight
so warrior girl
settle in for a moment
settle in for tonight
Morgan Flitt, Marketing Intern for Nourish
Morgan Flitt is a current senior at UNC-Charlotte studying marketing and sociology. She has found her love in the performing arts and in poetry since she was in high school, and has only recently returned to both crafts. She joined Nourish at the beginning of January and has been inspired by the fiercely feminist, unapologetic she works for and around. Nourish has given Morgan the gift of inspiration, providing the space, support, and encouragement to bring her full self to work each and every day. The second poem is for the warrior women she has met throughout her life, but specifically the warrior women at Nourish.
